I am confused on baby clothes sizes. I was looking in my baby's closet over the weekend all of his clothes start at 3 months. SoI purchased a "newborn" outfit to bring him home from the hospital in, but it is extremely small. I am unable to find any outfits that actually say "0-3" months on the tag. All of them say "3 months". Is this a problem oris0-3 months & 3 months actually the same size anyway? Thanks for any feedback you may have! Baby Clothes Sizes 0-3 months -vs- 3 months (3)

  • I think it is 0-3 months. Carter's come that way, they have size NB then size 3 months so I figure it is 03- then 3-6 and so on

They usually mean "up to" whatever the tag says. So "3 months" is 0-3, "6 months" is 3-6, etc. Just keep an eye out because I found some sizes varied drastically by brand (wish I could remember which) so by the time DD had reached the size they were almost too small.

Most newborn outfits will fit for a week or two at best unless you have a premie or tiny baby... but like PP said, 0-3 is usually about the same as 3 month.

Things like onesies differ greatly depending on brand. Gerber onesies that come in plastic packs of 3 or 5, for example, look TINY. But they stretch. Going through DD's old clothes, there are Gerber 12 month onesies that look about the same size as a Carter's 3 month onesie. Test the fabric by gently pulling on them if you are unsure if they are tagged properly.

The lady at Carter's told me that their 3 month is actually 3-6. It does look a lot bigger than other brands' 0-3 month size. I think I'm just going to only go by weight from now on. I'm a FTM too and the sizes are confusing!

Hmmm. Ive always thought that 0-3 months was the same as 3 months. and 3-6 months was the same as 6 months, ect ect.

    I have always felt that sizes go P, NB, 0-3, 3, 3-6,6,6-9,9,12,18,24,2T.

That is how things worked for my daugther anyway. Even though she was tiny she never fit into P, but she did start at NB and followed the trend above nearly exactly. She normally goes into clothes right at the size labeled, but can wear them way past the higher number for example. 3-6 months she would fit into around 3 months, but could wear them until 9 months. At 14 months this still applies. She can still wear 6-9 onesies, but she needed them at 6 months.

Basically she always fit into the smaller number at that age, and could wear them well beyond the higher number.

    I hope that helps.

Okay, I just checked the tag and the lady at Carter's was wrong. : The 3-month outfit I bought is for 8-12.5 lb, which makes it 0-3. That makes more sense.

weights are the best way. unfortunately it is super difficult to keep everything sorted/organized. it really is confusing!

i do believe almost every child born should wear a NB size. but i wouldn't buy out any nb items. nothing is wrong with something being a tad big.

    there is Premie, NewBorn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 2t, 3t, etc...

now different brands run different... even carters! when you buy like a pack of body suits the NB are tiny... but if you buy a NB onezy slogan shirt they are typically bigger.

the "just one year carters" from targer run small like the NB onezy packs from carters... and the Circo brand NB is bigger like the Carters brand slogan onezys
