Iga Swiatek's Rise: A New Era in Tennis Earnings
In a thrilling development, Iga Swiatek has emerged as the second-highest earner in the history of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), surpassing the legendary Venus Williams. But here's where it gets controversial: Swiatek achieved this feat without winning the recent WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan.
During her debut in Wuhan, the Polish tennis sensation defeated Marie Bouzkova and Belinda Bencic, but suffered a surprising defeat in the quarterfinals to Jasmine Paolini. Despite this setback, her run to the last eight earned her a substantial $83,250, pushing her career prize money to an impressive $42,862,240.
And this is the part most people miss: Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, previously held the second spot with $42,867,364 in earnings. While Williams is still listed as active and has played three tournaments this year, it's highly unlikely she'll reclaim the No. 2 position.
Swiatek's achievement is a testament to her dominance on the court. While she trails Serena Williams, who comfortably holds the top spot with $94,816,730, Swiatek's trajectory suggests she could surpass even Serena within the next six years.
So, how much has Swiatek earned this year? Despite a slow start, she found her rhythm during the summer, winning her first Wimbledon title and the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati. Her recent success in Seoul further boosted her earnings to $9,417,532 for the year, and with the WTA Finals approaching, she's on track to surpass the $10 million mark.
With Aryna Sabalenka at No. 4 with $42,480,621, the top of the WTA earnings list is a tightly contested race.
