Don't judge a curry by its picture! Tokyo's Kabuki-za Theater holds a culinary secret that might surprise you. Inside the magnificent Kabuki-za Theater in Ginza, you'll find a tranquil escape from the city's buzz: Cafe Hinoki. The best part? You don't need a theater ticket to enjoy it! This cozy, wood-accented cafe welcomes everyone.
One dish, in particular, has caught the attention of many: the "reproduction of the original Oriental Curry." This nostalgic dish, once served over a decade ago, is a throwback to the theater's former curry corner.
For a reasonable 1,100 yen (US$7.11), the picture promises a hearty, comforting curry brimming with chunky potatoes, carrots, and tender meat. But here's where it gets controversial... When the curry arrives, its appearance is more understated than the photo suggests. It's a simple serving of curry alongside a mound of rice, garnished with a small spoonful of fukujinzuke pickles.
And this is the part most people miss... Beneath the minimalistic presentation lies a deliciously spicy curry with a pleasant fruity sweetness. The roux, unlike typical Japanese curries, is flour-free. It's simmered with onions, tomatoes, apples, and a special chutney blending mangoes, raisins, and spices. The result? An Indian-style curry that trades the image of a mild, old-fashioned taste for a modern, spicy kick.
Cafe Hinoki offers a peaceful and approachable atmosphere, showcasing the beauty of the Kabuki-za Theater in a more casual setting. Located on the first floor, it has both an internal entrance through a souvenir shop and an external one. This makes it easy to pop in for lunch or refreshments while exploring Ginza. Besides curry, Cafe Hinoki offers sandwiches, desserts, and light meals, making it a great spot any time of day. However, the cafe is reserved for theater guests during intermissions.
So, if you order the Oriental Curry expecting a curry overflowing with chunky ingredients, you might be surprised. But will you regret it? Absolutely not! The deliciousness contained within its humble appearance will win you over.
